It’s (a)live! – “Sex with Ghosts” available now at Strange Horizons

August 18th, 2008 · 8 Comments

I’m so excited. My first fiction sale, and it’s available online now at

www.strangehorizons.com/2008/20080818/sexghosts-f.shtml

It’s going to ruin my wholesome midwesterner reputation completely, but I’m very happy with it. I mean, a robot sex worker quoting Yeats while she makes tea? It was a lot of fun to write, anyway, and I hope others will like reading it.

For those interested in the origins of stories, this one came about because I read a brief article about a guy who wrote a whole book about how people will sooner or later be having intimate relations with sentient robots (Love and Sex with Robots: The Evolution of Human-Robot Relationships by David Levy). Since the porn market seems to be at the cutting edge of every technological trend, I thought, sex bot brothel: what would that be like? And here ya go…

    Sarah,

Nice job on “Sex With Ghosts.” I found the story engaging and eerily believable (although personally disappointing in the protagonist’s refusal of Wilde’s overtures). Congratulations on the sale.

I shall look for more of your work (which I think would benefit from a slightly greater infusion of emotional resonance … But, hey. Everyone’s a critic – and this one hasn’t yet earned his first sale – so take that for whatever it’s worth).

    Seriously: way to go.

Hi, I saw your story on Strange Horizons and really liked it. It was strange and clever.

Funnily enough, I also read a brief article about the same book and wrote a short story about it. It’s not really finished yet. In my story, the sex robots escape and steal a car, ransack the local library where they eat books, and possibly kill someone. It’s not as good as your story, but you’ve inspired me to finish it, so thanks!

Really liked your piece. Good luck with your writing.

This really is terrific stuff, absolutly spot on.

I agree with your comment above, porn seems to drive a lot of new technology.

So the first humanoid robots are not running spaceships, after all. Dear old Isaac Asimov didn’t see it this way. Unless the 4th law was really, Never kiss(?) and tell!

Hi, Sarah. I come from Kelley Eskridge’s blog. I posted this over there, but it should also go here:

I read “Sex With Ghosts” a couple of weeks ago (I keep an eye on Strange Horizons) and remember enjoying your sense of humor quite a bit. I even had to stop every so many lines and just stare at the screen with a big smile and thinking, “She keeps doing that, wow.” Which is, you kept constructing those great moments with just a few words.

I loved your narrator. And your plot. And will keep an eye out for more stories by you. Cheers!
