Welcome to The Productive Writer!

January 29th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Here’s the inaugural post! If you are looking for ways to increase your productivity as a writer for page, stage, screen, web, or other (interactive media? audio?), this is the place to start.

First, introductions. I’m Sarah Kanning. I’ve taught creative and professional (technical writing) at the university level and in community arts venues. After a long time spent writing poetry (which is what I specialized in during my MFA), I’ve made the switch to screenwriting this year, and I’m having a lot of fun with that. (I had also written fiction, including a novel manuscript, and some short plays before, so this isn’t completely out of left field.)

Writing screenplays is fun because a screenplay is to a novel as a sonnet is to a free verse poem. There’s a certain personality for which that type of perfect freedom within a highly structured form is exhilarating. So that’s what I’ve been up to.

But in this blog, I’ll be focusing not on specific projects (you all have your own specific projects which you are much more interested in seeing through to completion) but on process, and how to get there from here, wherever here is for you at the moment.

I’m interested in “sharpening the saw” as that old Covey saying puts it, building and keeping momentum in the writing/revising/editing/offering process, and having fun with it. That’s what this blog is about. Hope you enjoy it!
